Addition and Subtraction of Integers We are learning to…add and subtract positive and negative integers. Sunday, November 15, 2015
2
Using the information that you know about adding integers turn the following subtraction problems into addition problems … 1. 8 – 7 = ___________Equivalent Addition Problem:_____________ 2. 10 – 3 = __________Equivalent Addition Problem:_____________ 3. 13 – 12 = _________Equivalent Addition Problem __________________ 4. 15 – 4 = _________Equivalent Addition Problem: _________________ 5. 17 – 2 = _________Equivalent Addition Problem: ________________ 1 8 + (-7) 7 10 + (-3) 1 13 + (-12) 11 15 + (-4) 15 17 + (-2)
3
Reflection Write about any trends or patterns you see in the “Equivalent Addition Problems” above. What parts of the expression change? What parts of the expression stay the same? How can we use this to help us?
4
Turning Subtraction into Addition To turn subtraction into addition you must: ADD THE OPPOSITE! This means to… 1. Keep the first number in the expression the same. 2. Change the subtraction sign into addition. 3. Change the second number in the expression to the opposite.
5
Equivalent Addition Problem:____________________ 5 + 4 9 7 + 2 9 -8 + (-3) -11 2 + (-10) -8 -1 + 4 3 Complete the “Assessment” questions independently…for each question write an equivalent addition expression!
