3 Influenced by different factors: environment, biology, development No specific reason why people become addicted WHY DO PEOPLE BECOME ADDICTED?

4 Drugs imitate chemical messengers in the brain Stimulates you more than normal If this continues then your brain adapts to the high, reduces dopamine in your brain This is how the addiction starts YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS duhhhh hhh

6 Leading preventable cause of death 480,000 deaths per year 16 million suffer with illness Contains nicotene ( highly addictive) TOBACCO

7 TOBACCO CONT. CIGARETTES Responsible for 1/3 of all cancers Causes lung diseases like emphysema or bronchitis Linked to leukemia ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Doesn’t have tar but has other toxins Not regulated More research is being done on e-cigarettes

8 Stimulant made from cocoa plant Crystalized form called crack Can be inhaled or smoked High lasts 15 to 30 min COCAINE

9 COCAINE CONT. Increases dopamine in the brain Long term use changes the brain which leads to addiction Effects depend on the method of intake Increases blood pressure, causes malnutrition, Can suffer heart attacks, strokes or death

10 Opioid drug made from morphine Injected, inhaled, snorted, or smoked Mimics morphine when in the body HEROINE

12 HEROINE CONT. Affects amount of oxygen to the brain – hypoxia HIV/AIDS is a problem when injecting Can cause collapsed veins Can clog blood vessels and damage vital organs

15 HALLUCINOGENS CONT. Affects are different for each person Can experience flashbacks, delusions, memory loss, etc. LSD – sold in tablets, taken orally, lasts 12 hours Peyote – cactus usually chewed or put in tea, lasts 12 hours PCP – white powder, can be smoked or ingested lasts 4-6 hours Mushrooms – contains psilocybin lasts 6 hours

16 Stimulant Controls the central nervous system Smoked, snorted, injected or dissolved in drinks METHAMPHETAMINES

17 METH CONT. Long term use can lead to weight loss Can cause skin sores, and scratching Worsens the progression of HIV and AIDS Causes severe dental problems

18 Also known as ecstasy or molly Taken orally Gives you feeling of euphoria Popular with teens at parties MDMA

19 MDMA CONT. Causes confusion, sleep abnormalities Can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature Sometimes contains other drugs when mixed with molly are very dangerous Was used in psychotherapy to treat PTSD and cancer patients

20 PREVENTION/TREATMENT Treatment is not simple Most people need multiple treatments to overcome addiction Counseling and/or group therapy Medication if necessary
