What kind of leadership did Wilhelm II give to Germany before WW1? A difficult birth left Wilhelm with a withered arm, which he always tried to conceal. Source A - BBC Historic Figures He gained a reputation as a swaggering militarist through his speeches and ill-advised newspaper interviews. While Wilhelm did not actively seek war, and tried to hold back his generals from mobilizing the German army in the summer of 1914, his verbal outbursts and his open enjoyment of the title of Supreme War Lord helped bolster the case of those who blamed him for the conflict. His role in the conduct of the war as well as his responsibility for its outbreak is still controversial. Some historians maintain that Wilhelm was controlled by his generals, while others argue that he retained considerable political power. Source B - www.history.com Source C – an Italian cartoon From 1897 Germany was run as a "functioning monarchy" with power concentrated in the hands of one man (thought by many who knew him to be mad) and that, as a result, "the Kaiser, the royal family, the Kaiser's circle of friends, the [imperial entourage and the court form[ed] the heart of this system on which the very highest officials of the Reich and state bureaucracy (as well as the leaders of the army and the navy) were psychologically dependent." Source D - John Röhl 1.What can you learn about Kaiser Wilhelm from Source B? 2.What is the purpose of Source C? 3.How far do Sources A, B and D suggest that Wilhelm was an autocratic leader?
