Production of Plastic Resins Chemists are responsible for producing synthetic resins Plastic is a forced combination of molecules Monomer - a simple molecule of synthetic resin. Polymer – a combination of monomers to form a long chain molecule.

Polymerization - process of making plastic, linking of monomers to form polymers. Homopolymerization – combining of like monomers into polymers. Copolymerization – combining two or more different monomer units Autoclave - a piece of equipment that applies heat and pressure to combine monomers to form polymers.

Types of Plastics Thermoplastic – plastic which can be reprocessed or reused. Thermosetting plastic– cannot be reused/reformed once heated. Definition of plastics – a synthetic substance made up of a long chain of complex molecules capable of being formed or molded into any desired shape.
