2 1. Click “Login” (must be registered); then enter email and password registered 2. Select samples that contain Puerto Ricans censused abroad: USA, Mexico, Haiti (but not Canada, Spain, etc. because Puerto Ricans are not always identified) samples 3. Select variables: as few or as many as needed variables 4. Select cases: BPLCTRY = “Puerto Rico” 5. Customize and submit extract request 6. When notified by email that extract is ready, download data and documentation to your computer 7. Unzip and analyze using favorite software. – Make an extract of Puerto Ricans censused abroad

3 1. Login: a. click “Login” on home page b. Click “Login” on registration page c. Submit registered email address & password

4 Click “Select Data” Note: to revise a prior extract, click “Saved Extracts” Click “Select Data”. Note: to revise a prior extract, click “Saved extracts”

5 First, click here, to select samples (the default is “all samples in the database”) 2a. integrated Metadata: Variables Menu Only start here if you wish to see variables for all samples

6 2b. Select Samples: For example Scroll down to USA

7 2b. Select Samples: Scroll down to USA, click years, and “submit sample selections” Scroll down to “USA” Click “USA” for all samples or year boxes to select samples for specific censuses.

8 2c. When finished selecting samples, click: “submit sample selections” or else!

9 Step 3a. Select Variables: Mouse-over “Person”, then click “Nativity or Brithplace” Mouse-over Person for drop down menu, then click “Nativity or Birthplace”

10 Step 3b. Select variables, including BPLCTRY (Country of Birth) Click gold button beside “BPLCTRY” to add this variable for cart (later you will select cases “Puerto Rico”) Click “Codes” to view a list of countries in “BPLCTRY”

11 Case count view Step 3c. Click “Case count view” to see the number of cases for countries in each sample

12 Case counts indicate the number of persons born in a specific country appearing in each selected sample. There are 64,988 Puerto Ricans in the 2000 census sample of the USA Step 3d. Scroll down to see counts for “Puerto Rico”. Click “View Cart” to continue. Hint: Note the code number for Puerto Rico to help with “Select Cases” later.

13 3e. After BPLCTRY, select other variables, when finished, click “View cart” to continue When finished selecting variables, Click “View Cart” to go to next step.

14 Step 3f. Review selections. Add/remove variables/samples. Click “Create data extract”

15 Step 4, Customize (or submit) extract: “Select Cases” Click here to select cases (by BPLCTRY ).

16 Step 4a. Select cases: select the variables which will be used to select cases. Here we chose “BPLCTRY” Click here to select cases by BPLCTRY. Then, click “Submit”

17 Step 4b. Scroll down to Puerto Rico and select. Then, click “Submit” Hint: Standard mouse conventions apply. To make more than one selection, hold and press right mouse button. Hint: Items are ordered by code number. Scroll to find a selection.

18 Step 4c. To select STATA, SPSS, or SAS Data Format, click “change” Click here, to change the data format from fixed column width to STATA, SAS, SPSS or csv.

19 Select a preferred data format: STATA, SPSS, SAS, cvs or the default: fixed solumn width Step 4d. Review selections, scroll to bottom, enter description, and click submit extract

20 Describe the extract to make it identifiable to you. In case you wish to revise it someday, a title will help you remember the contents of the extract. Step 4e. Customize description and click submit extract

21 Step 4c. Extract confirmation. Wait for email to download extract. Logout if you wish. Note: Once the extract is confirmed, Data Cart is now emptied.

22 5a. Email notification to retrieve extract (< 4 minutes). Click the link and login. Note: For citation, acknowledge both MPC and the statistical office that provided microdata

23 Step 5b. Click to download extract and metadata (“DDI”, basic or command files. Note: Click “SPSS” to download system file. Also download metadata, fixed column data, etc., as desired.

24 Handy when more variables are needed or a new sample becomes available. Need to revise a prior extract? Click “revise” to retrieve the corresponding instructions
