The Muscular System By: Jonah Stephens, Matt Stevens, & Brent Sweigert

Functions The muscular system is very important to our body. Without it we wouldn’t be able to move. As we have already said, muscles help us move, they also generate heat, and they help us maintain our balance.

Abduction and adduction Pulls a part of the body away from the body. Like moving your leg away from your foot. Adduction is when you pull your arm or leg back towards your body. Depression and elevation Depression is when you do a downward movement. Elevation is an upward movement. Flexion and extension Flexion means that you move a joint to make a bone come closer. Extension is when you move boners further apart using a joint. Types of Muscle Movements

How Muscles Work Muscles have small fibers that run horizontally. When the muscle is relaxed, the filaments only overlap little bit. When the muscle contracts/shortens, the fibers come together in bands or stripes. They get shorter by doing this. Muscles have small fibers that run horizontally. 5 The Three Major Muscles The three major muscles are smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscles. They all support different things and have different characteristics

Smooth Muscles The smooth muscle is found in the digestive tract and blood vessels. These are muscles that help you smoothly get your poop out of your butt.

Cardiac Muscles They are only found in your heart. They help your heart beat constantly and without it, you couldn’t live.

Skeletal Muscles Surprisingly, they are only about half the weight of a human. They are connected to our bones for movement and help protect the inner organs of our body.

Tendons Tendons are the end of each muscle. They are connected to the bone and when your muscle contracts, they go along with the muscle and pull the bone making it move.

Flexor This is a muscle that reduces the angle of a joint so that the bones move freely. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to walk normal. In fact, we wouldn’t be able to do anything normal at all.

Extensor This is a muscle that helps straighten a part of the body.

Diseases The muscles are great tools for life but like everything, they are not invincible. There can be aches, cramps, feeling of weakness or fatigue. Some common diseases are Muscular Dystrophy, Dermatomyositis, and Rhabdomyolysis

Relationships  Works with skeletal system to provide skeletal movement.  Works with the digestive system to control entrances and exits of digestive tracts  Works with the endocrine system to produce heat  Works with the nervous system to sense things  Works with the respiratory system to allow the diaphragm to expand  Works with the cardiovascular system to provide circulation.
