3 1 Attendance All students are expected to attend every class session of each course for which they are registered. Cannot miss lab- –must do a make-up or will receive a zero –Can only make-up 2 labs maximum Students are responsible for all that transpires in class whether or not they are in attendance.

5 1 Grading Lecture: 3 lecture exams will be given Lowest grade will be dropped ONLY IF all exams have been taken No- make-up exams will be given unless there is a validated emergency reason 2 highest grades combine to make up 45% of your course grade

6 1 Grading Laboratory: 35% of your course grade lab exercises (10 pts) field trips (10 pts) quizzes (30 pts) All laboratory assignments are due at the end of the lab period unless you get permission to hand it in next class

7 1 Grading Final Exam: – A cumulative final exam will constitute 20% of your course grade. It will be given on the last day of class

8 1 Extra Credit 10 current, oceanography-related articles and an in-depth analysis/ summary of each article Due by Dec 9th– NO LATE JOURNALS WILL BE ACCEPTED

9 1 Field Trips This course includes field trips that will take the place of lab periods. Attendance on these field trips is expected.- make-ups are available with instructor’s permission PAY ATTENTION TO THE SCHEDULE LABS ARE CANCELLED BECAUSE OF WEEKEND FIELD TRIPS

10 1 Be Courteous No cell phones or texting Be on time and plan to stay entire class (and lab) No excessive talking or disruptive behavior NO CHEATING OR PLAGIARISM- zero tolerance

13 The Ocean Ocean Facts: Covers 71% of the earth’s surface Accounts for 97% of the water on earth (rest in land ice, groundwater, lakes & rivers) Average depth = 3,796 meters (12,451 feet) (deepest = Mariana trench 11,022 m or 36,163 ft) Average temp = 3.9 o C (only 39 o F)
