Review team Prof. H. Iwasaki (KEK, TGC project responsible). Dr. S. Tanaka (KEK, TGC production responsible) Mr. M. Shoa (Weizmann, TGC production responsible) Dr. D. Lellouch (Weizmann, TGC Production data- base responsible). Prof. G. Tong (IHEP, Chinese Cluster Leader). Prof. G. Mikenberg (ATLAS MUON P.L.)

General impression The review team was very impressed by the enormous effort made by Shandong University team in preparing a highly professional TGC construction site, with a complete set of tooling, adapted to all steps of the production. The review team appreciates very strongly the efforts done by the Shandong University team in having produced a large set of pre- production modules (20 chambers), in order to master the technology, as well as to trained a good team of technicians that master each of the production steps. The quality achieved in the last set of modules, indicates (still to be confirmed by cosmic ray scan and radiation tests) that the group is ready to start the TGC mass production.

Material presented to the review The Shandong University team presented the following material (as requested for a general site review): –Construction manual (in Chinese) –Construction steps for technicians (in Chinese) –Full set of assembly drawings, list of parts and drawings of each components. –Description of the QA/QC steps and results –Schedule for the production.

Possible Improvements Ensure that the material used for gas tubes is consistent with the n-pentane use (nylon or polyurethane). Prepare detailed daily schedule for each station in the production. A honeycomb carrier should be used to move single detectors without honeycomb backing. Perform HV test for longer periods of time (at least one day). The tooling for such a test is being prepared. Insert small wheels on the detectors to move around the laboratory. Replace the single rods on the lower parts of the detector, which could lead to a too large moment, while being stored. Perform quality control of the graphite by immersing a sample into an n- pentane bath. Correct spacer thickness for CO2 channel cover.

Action items Provide a procedure to check the noise (including ground connections), in order to ensure low noise at thresholds of 40mV for wires and 60mV for strips. Ensure that 1-2 modules are sent soon to Israel, in order to confirm the uniformity in a cosmic ray scan, and the proper functioning in a high radiation environment. Consult with your colleagues about packing procedures of detectors for air-freight. Work towards ensuring that customs and funding problems are solved, since failure to deliver the expected TGC’s would have a major impact in the capabilities of a large scientific enterprise (ATLAS).

Conclusions The Shandong University TGC team has shown itself as a technically knowledgeable and highly motivated team. The Shandong site is considered to be ready to start production at a slow rate, while moving to full rate after the first 2 modules have been certified (cosmic & high radiation tests). In the name of the review committee, we would like to acknowledge the superb hospitality of the Shandong team.
