In this lesson you will learn that there are many different types of functions (machines) that accept input and produce output. Not all inputs are allowed for all functions

 Different types of functions: *Note: Not all functions have formulas. For example, BD above.

 For You to Explore: Pg. 271 (1a-t, 3, 4)  Check work  Pg. 273 (11, 12)

SUBSETS OF THE REAL NUMBERS WHOLE NUMBERS: 0, 1, 2, 3, ……………. INTEGERS: ……., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …………. RATIONAL NUMBERS: A ratio of two integers (3/4, 1/3, -4/1, ….) when written as decimals, rational numbers terminate or repeat. (3/4 = 0.75, or 1/3 = 0.3333….) IRRATIONAL NUMBERS: They neither terminate or repeat. (л, 2, etc.) NATURAL NUMBERS: 1, 2, 3, …………….

In this lesson you will learn about domain, target, and range Define “equal functions”

 Functions are machines that take inputs and produce outputs.  An input is anything you put into the machine and the corresponding output is what the machine produces  Arrow notation: means “x maps to “ This is a reciprocal machine. Are there any numbers that you can not put into this machine?

 All inputs that produce an output is the domain of the function  For the reciprocal function, 0 is not in the domain because is not defined. The domain of the function is part of its definition.

*

 Example 1:  Find the domain, target, and range for the function where Domain is, and the Target is determines the Range Since this function only produces positive perfect squares, There are no negative values in the range. So the Range is the set of all nonnegative real numbers
