3
Acids and Carbonates Acids react with carbonates to make Carbon Dioxide.
4
A Test for carbon Dioxide limewater Carbon dioxide is a colourless gas; Carbon dioxide does not burn as hydrogen; Carbon dioxide gas turns limewater milky. 1 2 3 What happens to limewater when calcium carbonate is added to acid?
5
Acids and Carbonates About testing carbon dioxide... calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid carbon dioxide + calcium chloride + water Metal carbonate + acidcarbon dioxide + salt + water
6
Carbonates... calcium carbonate copper carbonate sodium carbonate All carbonates make carbon dioxide when they neutralise acids.
7
Carbonates rocks... limestone chalk marble
8
What do you know about acids and carbonates? ?
9
1 – Acids react with carbonates to make carbon dioxide. This is a neutralisation reaction. 2 – Carbon dioxide gas turns limewater milky. 3 – Limestone, marble and chalk are made from calcium carbonate, so they react with acids. This means that they wear away because of acids in the surroundings.
