Answer these TRUE or FALSE questions in your books: 1)Blood vessels that carry blood into the heart are called arteries 2)The heart is a muscle 3)Veins carry “oxygenated” blood 4)Human cells convert CO 2 into energy and produce O 2 as a by-product FALSE – Arteries Away from the heart TRUE FALSE – why? FALSE – other way aroundMane, 16 Whiringa-ā-rangi 2015 Do now:
3
Our Kaupapa: 1) Label a diagram of your heart (A) 2) Describe how your blood is transported from your heart to your cells and back again (M) 3)Explain what causes heart attacks and how they can be prevented (E)

FIRST deoxygenated blood is returned to the heart from the body in the large vein called the VENA CAVA The blood arrives into the RIGHT ATRIUM before passing through the TRICUSPID VALVE into the RIGHT VENTRICLE In order for the deoxygenated blood to get oxygen it needs to travel to the LUNGS. It is carried in the PULMONARY ARTERY The PULMONORY VEIN carries blood from the LUNGS back to the LEFT ATRIUM of the HEART From the ATRIUM the oxygenated blood goes through the BICUSPID VALVE to the LEFT VENTRICLE The wall of the LEFT VENTRICLE is thick and muscular as it has to pump the oxygenated blood out into the AORTA The AORTA is the main artery in the body and it carries blood out to the ORGANS and TISSUES of the body When the oxygen has been used from the blood in the cells, carbon dioxide and waste products are returned to the blood. This generally happens in the CAPILLARIES The blue blood is then collected from the capillaries and passes into the thin walled VEINS around the body

Look at your heart/lung diagrams from last week... and then: 1)write down what the circulatory system does 2)your answer must include the following words: heart lungs veinsarteries cells oxygencarbon dioxide
6
Merit Answer: 1.The heart pumps blood in arteries, carrying oxygen and nutrients to our cells to keep us alive 2.The heart pumps blood carrying carbon dioxide in veins away from these cells back to the lungs to get rid of the CO 2 and get fresh O 2
7
1)The circulatory system pumps blood carrying oxygen and nutrients around the body 2)The heart receives blood from the lungs with fresh oxygen 3)The heart then pumps this blood out of its arteries to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all the body’s cells 4)The cells convert the oxygen and nutrients in to energy via respiration, but produces carbon dioxide as a waste-product 5)This “de-oxygenated” blood is returned to the lungs by veins, and the lungs then “re-oxygenate” the blood for another cycle Excellence Answer:
