O Quiz Thursday O Turn to the next available page in your notebook to write down what you need to study O NA Cultural Regions O The Legacy of Columbus O Columbus & the Taino O Columbian Exchange Map O Cortes & the Aztec O Pizarro & the Inca O European Land Claims in the New World Map O European Interactions with the Native Americans (Spanish, French, Dutch, English)

2 Turn to the next page in your notebook 1. Label your page: European Land Claims in the New World 2. Get a paperback atlas from the back counter 3. Turn to page 28—sketch the outlines of North America & South America on your page (free-hand or trace )

3 4. Label North America and South America 5. Label Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean 6. Outline on your map New Spain, New Castile, and New Granada (do NOT label them, do NOT color them, just outline them) 7. Choose 1 colored pencil (not light blue OR brown)

4 8. With that 1 color: shade the 3 areas you just outlined the SAME color 9. Create a KEY box for your map (large enough for 6 different things) 10. Include “Spanish claims”—color code it for the color pencil you just used

5 11. Now use the map on the top of page 29 to outline these areas: Hudson Bay Company, New Foundland, New France, Louisiana and English Colonies (do NOT label; do NOT color) 12. Choose another 1 colored pencil (not light blue, not brown, not your earlier color) 13. Shade ONLY the Hudson Bay Company, New Foundland and English Colonies with that 1 color 14. Add to your key “English claims” and color code it for the color you just used

6 15. Choose another 1 colored pencil (not light blue, not brown, not either of your earlier colors) 16. Shade Louisiana and New France with that color 17. Add to your key “French claims” and color code it for the color you just used

7 18. Add to your key “Dutch claims” and use the map below to draw in & shade the Dutch claims

8 19. Choose a tan or brownish color—LIGHTLY shade all other land in North America and South America that color 20. Add to your key “Land not claimed by Europeans” and color code it for whatever color you used in step 19 21. Now choose LIGHT BLUE and lightly shade your oceans 22. Add “water” or “oceans” to your key. Whew! Finished!

9 O Use your map, and knowledge of settlement and colonization of the New World, to answer these questions: 1. Which Old World country claimed the most land in the New World? 2. How would you describe geographically where each European country (England, France, Spain) claimed land? 3. What are 2 possible reasons for the different geographic locations each country claimed?

10 European Interactions with Native Americans O Title your page: European Interactions with Native Americans O Divide your paper into 4 equal parts. Label each part: Spanish, French, Dutch, and English O Read the document and take notes about: Information describing the reasons for settlement in that area Information about what the land/environment was like in that area Interactions of Europeans with Natives Impact of that interaction on Native Americans

11 European Interactions with Native Americans Assignment O Divide your paper into 4 equal parts. Label each part: Spanish, French, Dutch, and English O Make a title in the middle: European Interactions with Native Americans O Draw 4 pictures that show the interaction between Native Americans and Europeans. O Each picture should focus on one European group: The Spanish, the French, the English, and the Dutch. O Each picture needs a 2 sentence caption that explains the interaction between the Native Americans and the Europeans. O Be creative: no white spaces, no stick figures, include environmental background: be historically correct; and be correct in use of language conventions.
