Paper 171986 A novel fully plastic caliper pig for low-risk pipeline inspection Alberto Di Lullo BUSINESS OBJECTIVES Slide 2 Mitigate the risk inherent in pigging by transforming low-risk pigs into inspection tools Detect major restrictions before pigging Detect and localize changes of average ID (e.g. due to deposits or pipe deformations) Detect and localize pipe deformations (“caliper”) and estimate inner wall roughness Measure pipeline thickness (basic MFL functionality) Ready Field tested Patented e-splora™ eni Systems for Pipeline Low Operating Risk Assessment

Paper 171986 A novel fully plastic caliper pig for low-risk pipeline inspection Alberto Di Lullo LOW-RISK PIGGING ROAD-MAP Slide 3 Line never pigged e-splora™ ILI (if appropriate) Foam Pigs normally pose very low risk due to: Negligible capability to displace solids Capability to negotiate restricted pipeline regions If blocked, can be broken by small pressure differences Even foam pigs may be risky or pose operational problems Presence of almost complete restrictions pre-pig inspection Displacement of huge amounts of liquids “skeleton” implementation

Paper 171986 A novel fully plastic caliper pig for low-risk pipeline inspection Alberto Di Lullo CONCLUSIONS Slide 13 Design and prototype of a new low-cost and low-risk plastic caliper pig Potential to detect, locate and measure inner diameter changes, roughness changes and chemical properties (salinity and pH) Compatible with operationally flexible and frequent use Comparatively cheap and easy replacement of damaged parts Laboratory test of the new sensing elements with good results Field test in a 12”, 8km pipeline in Italy and comparison with a single- channel commercial caliper pig The field test demonstrated the effectiveness and potential of the new Caliper Smart Foam Pig
