3. “Ministers’ Wives &Self-Care” First Lady, Coleen Balius Evangelical Free Church of Huntington Beach Exposed to ministry at an early age - Daddy was a Minister of the Gospel in a Baptist Church (Swedish Baptists). In fact, my Mama was daughter of a Preacher who still used to give sermons in Swedish! God prepared me to understand and to trust His Work of Grace in Jesus and become a Christian still as a child and I've known Him over many days. Kirk and I met in college. He had trusted Christ through a Sports Camp at the age of 17 and he wholly wanted to serve with his life. He is a gifted teacher & was called to change the world by influencing students. We married and watched God do marvelous things in our lives, leading us to Europe to first study in Switzerland and then to teach in a seminary in Germany, and then to the U.S. to teach in a Christian University named Biola. The Lord entrusted us with 3 kids: one boy and two girls. This has not expanded to one daughter - in-law, one son-in-law, one serious daughter’s boyfriend and 2 grandsons. I work as a nurse in a hospital, but love being by my husband's side in ministry, as 12 yrs ago we were led to transition from preparing leaders of the church to ministering in a church ourselves. We are with the Evangelical Free Church of Huntington Beach. Some of my most fun hours of the week are doing one-on-one Bible study with 3 gals in their 20s and my own 3 “daughters".

4. “Widowed Ministers’ Wives ” Widowed First Lady, Teresa Curtis Village Baptist Church Sister Theresa Curtis is the widow of the late Reverend Luther M. Curtis, Jr., who served as pastor of the Village Baptist Church of Los Angeles for 42 years. Sister Curtis is a Christian, loves the Lord and grew up in a Christian home with God-fearing parents. Her early childhood training and Christian up-bringing prepared her to seek and accept opportunities of service in the church. She is an active member of the Village Baptist Church where she has served as a Sunday School teacher for nearly 40 years, and has also taught in Vacation Bible School for more than 20 years. Two years ago, the current pastor, Reverend W. Charles Harris, Jr. appointed her as Superintendent of the Sunday School. She is also a member and secretary of the General Missionary Union. She previously served as chairman of the Ministers’ Wives and Widows of Los Angeles District Association for 9 years, and is also an active member of the Baptist Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows Union of Los Angeles and Vicinity. Sister Curtis personally and publicly acknowledged her love for the Lord and accepted Him as her Savior and was baptized at the age of 8 at the New Zion Baptist Church, Magnolia, Mississippi. She received her early education in the public schools of Magnolia, graduated from Pike County High School and attended Dillard University – New Orleans, LA and Jackson State University – Jackson, MS. She continues to avail herself of opportunities for learning. She regularly attends the Annual Sessions of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education in preparation for Christian leadership and has enrolled in and completed many of the prescribed study courses, including those designed specifically for Ministers’ Wives. She has participated in workshops and seminars for the Women’s Dept. of the Western Baptist State Convention. More recently, and in fact for the past 4 years, she was privileged to teach a class “The Role of the Minister’s Wife” in the Western Baptist State Convention Congress of Christian Education. Her sincere desire is to reflect the image of Christ in her daily walk.

Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts, West Los Angeles City College; Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership Biola University, La Mirada, California; Honorary Doctorate Mt. Carmel Institute of Biblical Studies. Retired Licensed Fire & Casualty Insurance Agent President/Founder Gardena Valley & Vicinity Ministers’ Wives & Ministers’ Widows and the Cynthia Perry Ray Foundation (Outreach of GVVMWMW).
