2 Different Types of Aid Medical aid (medicines, doctors, nurses etc.) Financial aid (money) Military aid (weapons and technical assistance) Food aid (long-term programme of food supplies) Technical aid (equipment, experts) Emergency aid (food, shelter, medicines etc.)

3 Debt Relief Many people believe the best form of aid is debt cancellation Jubilee Debt Campaign pressurises for debt relief Britain has cancelled debt from several countries provided they meet certain human rights conditions

4 Forms of Aid Bi-lateral aid is given directly from one government to another, often ‘tied’. Multi-lateral aid is given by major world alliances (e.g. UN, EU etc.), without strings attached. Voluntary aid is given by charities (e.g. Blythswood, Oxfam etc.) - ‘Non- Governmental Organisations’ (NGOs)

5 United Nations Agencies The UN organises its aid through specialised agencies UNICEF provides emergency, or short- term, aid The other UN agencies provide development, or long-term, aid to raise living conditions and standards
