Welcome to Day 3 STEM Aeronautic Camp August 8, 2012
2
FLOPPY FISH GREETING Cast your line toward someone in the circle. Reel in the fish -- the person being reeled in must flop like a fish and try to get away. Greet the person you reeled in.

Reading “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” ~Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci made the first real studies of flight in the 1480's. He had over 100 drawings that illustrated his theories on bird and mechanical flight. The drawings illustrated the wings and tails of birds, ideas for man carrying machines, and devices for the testing of wings.
4
Flying Music Today’s song is: Air Force Theme, “Wild Blue Yonder”
5
Learning Targets for Camp I can explain the Principles of Flight. I can demonstrate the Principles of Flight by constructing a glider. I can use the Engineering Design Process this week to complete a variety of aeronautic products. I can reflect on my aeronautic camp experience each day in my journal. I can work collaboratively with others.
6
Progress Toward Mastery I can describe Principles I can demo Engineering I can reflect I can work of Flight Design Process in Journal Collaboratively Duplicate this chart in your journal.
7
Hot Air Balloon Make 3 sheets by gluing 2 pieces of tissue paper together with a 1/2 inch seam.
8
Cut excess on Edges, 2, 4, and 6. Glue edges together. Cut out the gore pattern.
9
Carefully place all 3 of your glued sheets together matching up the corners.
10
Fold like a hot dog roll.
11
Fold again like a hot dog roll.
12
Use paper clips to attach the gore pattern to the folded edge of your tissue.
13
This is how the paper clipped gore pattern should look.
14
Very carefully cut along the curved edge of the gore pattern.
15
Carefully remove the paper clips and lift off the pattern.
17
Apply glue 1/2 inch in on the edge.
18
Fold the gore over the glue being care- ful not to have any holes in the seams.
19
Carefully open up the balloon to get to the last seam.
20
Repair any holes in the seams.
21
Follow the directions to cut the circle for the top of the balloon. Cover the small hole at the top of the balloon.
22
Follow the directions to complete the collar for the large bottom hole that will fit over the launcher.
23
Fit the bottom of the balloon in between the collar and staple it together.
24
It’s now time to see how well your balloon flies!
25
Become an Air Traffic Controller Use laptops to learn about air traffic Complete Smart Skies - Line Up With Math Workbook 1
26
Debrief Reflect on the multi-step process of constructing a balloon. What did you and your partner do well? What could you have improved?
