On-Shift Examination Scenario Continuous Miner Section What you will need: Pencil and paper to take notes or perform calculations Calculator to calculate air quantity (Quantity = Velocity X Area; Area = Length X Width) Learning Outcomes: Know the locations where an on-shift examination must be performed. Know what checks must be made at each location during an on-shift examination. Know what actions should be taken when required checks are made. Know what actions should be taken when observing a hazardous condition. Hazardous conditions may include those relating to: –Guarding –Roof and rib conditions –Gas content –Ventilation –Fire hazards –Dust control –Clean-up Know what items to record in the on-shift examination report.
2
On-shift Examination Scenario Continuous Miner Section You are the Section Supervisor for the West Mains 003 working section. You have conducted a pre-shift examination and called the report outside. You are now waiting on the section for the crew to arrive. During your shift you will be conducting an on-shift examination, and with the help of others, you will be doing other required examinations and duties on the section. Your crew brought in extra SCSRs and a new fire extinguisher for the battery charging station. You will be correcting all hazards and/or violations you observed and reported in the pre-shift record. Print off and save the pre-shift report for future reference in this problem.
4
On-shift Examination Scenario Continuous Miner Section This is a continuous miner section. Twelve miners work on this section. The entries average 20 feet wide and 5 1/2 feet high. The ventilation plan calls for: –Air quantity at least 7000 cfm at all working places where coal is being cut, mined, drilled for blasting, or loaded. –Air quantity at least 18,500 cfm in the last open crosscut. –Air quantity at least 3000 cfm in working places being bolted. –Air movement in all other places shall be sufficient to dilute, render harmless and carry away flammable, explosive, noxious and harmful gases, dust, smoke and fumes. The roof control plan calls for: –6 foot bolts on 4 foot centers. –Entry widths shall be no more than 20 feet in width.

Your crew has arrived on the section and are gathered at the section power center, they have brought in a new fire extinguisher and extra SCSRs. What should you do at this time? –Let the crew have a break and a snack before they begin work and discuss what activities everyone did over the weekend. –Conduct a safety meeting with the crew. –Refer to your pre-shift notes, and inform the crew of the hazards and violations observed during the pre-shift.
7
-Incorrect. Let the crew have a break and a snack before they begin work and discuss what activities everyone did over the weekend. -Correct. Conduct a safety meeting with the crew. -Correct. Refer to your pre-shift notes, and inform the crew of the hazards and violations observed during the pre-shift. What should you do at this time?
8
Now that you have conducted a safety meeting, and reviewed the pre-shift report with the crew, what should you do next? -Have someone to replace the missing fire extinguisher at the battery charging station. -Tell the crew where the equipment is and where to start mining and tell the crew to go to work. -Have someone to take the extra SCSRs to the emergency supply car and put into the SCSR container.
9
What should you do next? -Correct. Have someone to replace the missing fire extinguisher at the battery charging station. Refer to 75.1100-2 (e) -Incorrect. Tell the crew where the equipment is and where to start mining and tell the crew to go to work. -Correct. Have someone to take the extra SCSRs to the emergency supply car and put into the SCSR container. Refer to 75.1714 (a) (1)
10
Now that you have had someone to replace the fire extinguisher at the battery charging station and the SCSRs to the SCSR storage container, what should you do next? -Tell the crew where the equipment is and where to start mining and tell the crew to go to work. -Have a qualified person to conduct methane examination in all working places. -Have the electricians make repairs to the pump cable and start the pump. -Have someone go to the conveyor belt tailpiece and replace the guard and clean up the coal spillage.
11
What should you do next? -Incorrect. The crew should not begin mining before required examinations have been conducted and hazardous conditions and violations are corrected. -Correct. Have a qualified person to conduct methane examination in all working places before electrical equipment is energized. Refer to 75.362 (d) (1) (i) -Correct. Have the electricians make repairs to the pump cable and start the pump. Refer to 75.511 -Correct. Have someone go to the conveyor belt tailpiece and replace the guard and clean up the coal spillage. Refer to 75.1728 (c), 75.1722 (b) and 75.400
12
After you had the cable repaired, spillage cleaned up, guard replaced, and the working places examined for methane. What should you do next? -Travel down the track haulage to ensure Bill is repairing the stopping at #48 crosscut. -Instruct the continuous miner crew, roof bolter crew and shuttle car crew to conduct a pre-operational examination of their equipment. -Instruct the continuous miner operator and roof bolter operator to conduct dust parameter examination to assure compliance with the respirable dust parameter specified in the mine ventilation plan.
13
What should you do next? -Incorrect. There are other examinations you and the crew need to conduct. -Correct. Instruct the continuous miner crew, roof bolter crew and shuttle car crew to conduct a pre-operational examination of their equipment. Pre-operational examination should always be conducted to ensure safe operation of the equipment. -Correct. Instruct the continuous miner operator and roof bolter operator to conduct dust parameter examination to assure compliance with the respirable dust parameter specified in the mine ventilation plan. Refer to 75.362 (a) (2)
14
The pre-operational examinations and the dust parameter examinations have been completed. What do you need to do next? -Go to the emergency supply car and check for additional roof support material. -Instruct the roof bolter crew to replace the six sheared roof bolts outby the face of #3 working face. -Instruct the continuous miner operator and bolter operator to check for methane in the working place where they will be bolting and mining. -Perform an air measurement in the working place where the continuous miner will be mining and the roof bolter will be working.
15
What Should You Do Next? -Incorrect. Other examinations need to be conducted before mining process begins. -Correct.
