4 Year One: TO DO LIST  Meet with a Crown Adviser  Learn how to navigate my.ucsc.edumy.ucsc.edu  Research potential majors  Identify requirements for declaring your major  Take foundation courses, prerequisite courses, & evaluate your performance  UTILIZE campus resources (Advising, Tutoring, MSI, DRC, Career Center, etc.)  Find what you like and follow your instincts!

5 Graduation Requirements  University & Campus-Wide Requirements  180 quarter credits  Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)  American History & Institutions Requirement (AH&I): Many students satisfy w/classes taken during high school or transfer credit  College Requirement: College Core Course: CRWN 80A or 80B  Pass/No Pass Grades: No more than 25% of your UCSC credits can be graded P/NP. Check with college & major advisers before selecting P/NP grading option  2.0 GPA: Must have a minimum 2.0 UC GPA (Only UC courses including courses taken at another UC campus)  Senior Residency: Must be registered at UCSC for at least 3 terms and 35 of your final 45 credits must be taken at UCSC.  General Education Requirements  See Next Slide  Major Requirements

7 Writing  Composition Requirement 1 (C1)  Satisfy C1 by passing CRWN 80A, or scoring 10^ on AWPE, or 4^ on AP English Lang. & Comp. or AP English Lit. & Comp. Exam or 5^ on IBH English A Lang. & Lit. or English A Lit. Exam, or a UC transferable composition course that meets C1  Composition Requirement 2 (C2)  Satisfy C2 by passing CRWN 80B or WRIT 2 or earning a C ^ in a UC transferable composition course that meets C2  MUST BE COMPLETED BY YOUR 7 TH QUARTER OF ENROLLMENT

11 High School Memorize material Work often done in class Lots of tests, quizzes, & assignments Class materials provided Small classes/teachers know you Parents provide motivation/support/interve ntion Teachers provide additional support Grades based on effort Study just before the quizzes & exams

12 College Apply & analyze material Most work done outside of class 2 or 3 exams/projects Must purchase class materials Larger classes/professors don’t know you personally Must self-motivate & manage time Attendance not always required, but IMPERATIVE May need to find additional support (tutoring, etc.) Grades based on performance Must consistently study & review material

13 Road Rules to Success Read syllabus for each course carefully Know the rules! Make a plan to study for each course everyday Complete reading/assignments BEFORE the lecture Review lecture notes almost immediately AFTER each class Get Connected & USE resources Start early! Quarters move fast! Procrastination is a road block! If you fail, learn from your mistakes and ask for help Remember it is OK to try something to see if you like it It is OK to change your mind about your major

15 Alternate Routes An alternate route can get you to the same place Major choice does not always determine one pathway only! Education Abroad Program (EAP) May be able to take major/minor/GE courses Many students go junior year Cost is similar to UCSC (sometimes less) Application process starts early
