History Born at Woolsthorpe Newton was elected Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge to the Convention Parliament of 1689 Following the War of the Spanish Succession, Newton became the most highly esteemed natural philosopher in Europe His major work, Opticks, appeared in 1704 During two to three years of intense mental effort he prepared Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) commonly known as the Principia Newton also wrote on Judaeo-Christian prophecy, whose decipherment was essential, he thought, to the understanding of God According to the well-known story, it was on seeing an apple fall in his orchard at some time during 1665 or 1666 that Newton conceived that the same force governed the motion of the Moon and the apple

Newton and Galileo Isaac Newton was very interested in the discoveries of Galileo and others Galileo had proved that the planets revolve around the sun, not the earth as people thought at the time Like Galileo, he realized that mathematics was the way to explain and prove those laws

Newton’s Laws First Law If a hat is sitting on the table, it will remain sitting on the table until a force (such as your hand) moves it. Second Law This shows that force is equal to mass multiplied by acceleration (gravity). It shows that without gravity (such as being on the moon) there would be no weight. Third Law When in a car while not wearing a seatbelt, driving 50 mph, and you have a sudden stop, you will remain in forward motion (until stopped) as the brakes stop the car.
