2 Name of Museum About the Curators We are students at Bradley University and our Museum focuses on some very influential women in history. We hope you enjoy learning about their accomplishments and seeing primary resources that correspond to each woman. Enjoy! 7 Name of Museum Lydia Moss Bradley was a determined philanthropist during her time. Despite the deaths of her husband and six children she persevered and was able to found the Bradley Polytechnic Institute, which is now called Bradley University. During her time as First Lady, she did many things to help make the country a better place. 10 Name of Museum Madeleine Albright served as the United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001. She was the first woman to become the United States Secretary of State. 11 Name of Museum Louisa May Alcott is a famous American author during the mid 1800’s. Her most popular book was Little Women, is loosely based on her and her sisters. She also published over 30 other books and stories. She is pictured here sitting at her writing desk. 12 Name of Museum Georgia O’Keeffe is a famous American painter from the 20 th century. She is best known for her canvases of flowers and southwest landscapes. One of her well known paintings was done in 1931 entitled Cow’s Skull with Calico Roses. Above is a picture taken of her by Alfred Stieglitz in 1919. 13 Name of Museum Mary Cassatt was an impressionist artist during the later 1800s. She moved to Paris to pursue an art education. Even when her paintings were tragically destroyed she found a way to overcome the obstacle and become a famous painter. Pictured above is one of her artworks entitled Mother’s Kiss. 14 Name of Museum This is a portrait of Clara Barton from 1910 where she posed as President of the Red Cross Society. Clara Barton was one of the first women to teach school in the days when most teachers were men. She was one of the first women to work for the federal government. She risked her life and helped bring supplies and support to Civil War soldiers. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at the age of sixty, and ran it for 23 years. 15 Name of Museum This is a picture of Marie Curie with President Harding, taken in 1921. Marie Curie was a brilliant scientist. She was a Polish and naturalized- French physicist and chemist. Marie conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the first person, and only woman, to win twice. Title: Pres. 17 Name of Museum Rosa Parks was an influential activist in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States during the 1960’s. She was one of many African Americans who showed defiance towards racial segregation. She is pictured above getting fingerprinted after her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger. 19 Name of Museum Harriet Tubman was an African American abolitionist who is most famous for her work on the underground railroad during the time of slavery and the civil war. In the underground railroad, Tubman helped numerous slaves and their families hide and escape to safety. She is seen here photographed in 1911.
