Pre-interview Preparatory Exploration: who you are Preparatory Arranging: where/when it will take place, etc PreparatoryReviewing/Exploring, and Consulting: examining and considering the information Preparatory Empathy: anticipation of what others might sense, feel, think, and do as they meet with you

INTRODUCTORY STAGE Greet Client Introduce Self – full name, profession, and by agency or departmental affiliation, and role. E.g. “Hello Mr. and Mrs. Adabu. My name is Dan Majors. I am a social worker here at the family services agency. I specialize in helping families who are dealing with family issues of one kind or another. Please call me Dan” Small Talk Policy and Ethical Factors: time clarification, confidentiality issue and its parameters, etc. Describing or inquiring about general purpose: “What brings you in today?” (when appropriate); or overview of what you know or requested

DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE EXPLORING - a collaborative process with clients and/or others of examining the current state of the presenting problems and issues of concern, as well as history and/or origin. Identification of the problem Bio-psycho-social assessment Micro – Intrapersonal Mezzo – Interpersonal Macro – Larger environmental context Intensity/severity Frequency Duration Risk and resilience factor assessment Hypothesis (client and social worker’s) Explanatory-why something happened Change-oriented-how a problem might be resolved

DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE Clarify issues for work Establish the purpose (wants, aspirations) Bio-psycho-social assessment congruence with action-plan Micro – Intrapersonal Mezzo – Interpersonal Macro – Larger environmental context Review previous attempts to address the problem Success Partial success Unsuccessful Work on problem-solving and further developing the purpose Explore alternatives Explore consequences
