Basic Facts -Emergency Planning and Community Right-To- Know Act -National Law -Signed into effect in 1986 -2012- amendments to sections 302, 304, 311, 312

What is it? -according to the EPA... “ [It] was created to help communities plan for emergencies involving hazardous substances. EPCRA requires hazardous chemical emergency planning by federal, state and local governments, Indian tribes, and industry. It also requires industry to report on the storage, use and releases of hazardous chemicals to federal, state, and local governments.” -The act was created to combat the problem of environmental degradation do to human created chemical and toxic waste - An incident in 1984 in Bhopal India triggered the concerns and eventual creation on the act

Who enforces the act? -The EPA is the group who enforces the act but it requires state and local governments to present preventative and responsive measures as well as planning. -The people of the United States benefit as well from the act since they are informed to the dangers of toxic chemicals released into the environment.
