Chemistry Chapter 01 Chemistry and You
2
Part 01 Chemistry and the Scientific Method pages 3-13
3
1.Chemistry -science -physical science -studies matter and its changes - non-living materials - other physical sciences? -“central science” - Jobs where chemistry is involved? Write some jobs
4
2.Scientific Method -orderly, systematic approach to acquiring knowledge - a way of answering questions about the world we live in
5
2.Scientific Method -observe (uses the 5 senses) -question -hypothesis - tentative answer to question -“prediction of conclusion” - must be testable, often “if/then” format -experimentation - tests the hypothesis -control -variables -conclusion
6
When a hypothesis is tested many, many times with the same conclusion, a Theory is developed. A “super-hypothesis”. –Well supported, widely accepted explanation for many observations –Can be wrong/revised –Can be used to make predictions
7
When a fact of nature is discovered can be tested and cannot be proven wrong, what is it called? Law –Description of a naturally occurring process or event –Can be used to predict events or experimental results –Is supported by all available observations and data –Does not explain observations –Examples of some laws?
8
Hypothesis Makes prediction based on existing knowledge Is testable Is falsifiable Theory Explains observations Is used to make predictions Is supported by data Is testable Is falsifiable Law Describes observations Is used to make predictions Is supported by data Is testable
