Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan For High School and College Students

Developmental School Counseling Plan ASCA:The Transformed School Counselor is an integral part of the total educational program of the school and students. Counselors are responsible for the academic success of all students and not just personal, interpersonal, social, and crisis management. Education Trust: In accordance to the “No Child Left Behind” Act, this lesson plan will raise student achievement and offer data for accountability.

Competencies Students will understand how they process information and learn information processing strategies that will help them better understand new material and store that material in not just short-term but long- term memory that will enable them to perform academically on an optimal level.

Learning Objectives Students will understand how they process information. Students will learn about the “Memory Continuum” (short-term and long-term memory). Students will learn when and how to to commit information to each type of memory.

Learning Objectives Students will be introduced to the following short-term memory strategies: mnemonics, first-letter method, and active rehearsal. Students will be introduced to the following long-term memory strategies: associating new material with prior knowledge, forming mental images for association, and paraphrasing and summarization.

Materials Handout packet pulled from the LASSI: Learning Study Strategies Inventory, module on Information Processing.

Activities Students will be given 10 minutes to do the activity entitled: Analyzing Your Information Processing Skills and a discussion will ensue afterwards about their findings that will lead directly into discussions on the importance of constructing constructing knowledge.

Activities Students will get an introduction to each information processing strategies and given and an example is given. Students will then be asked to take 2-3 minutes after each strategy is presented to come up with their own example for each skill discussed and share it with the class.

Assessment and Follow-Up Perception Students will turn in to counselor a paper on their most effective information processing skills, when/how/why they use it, and what type of memory the skill belongs to. Counselors will network with teachers in all disciplines to share the lesson and strategize ways to incorporate the skills into their curricula.

Assessment and Follow-UP Data School Counselor will look at term grades of students to see if there is an improvement across all subject areas. School Counselor gather scores on Regents exams to see if they’ve went up.
