BLOOD BORNE PATHOGEN TRAINING FOR SCHOOL STAFF WILKES COUNTY SCHOOLS 613 CHERRY STREET N. WILKESBORO, NC 28659
2
OBJECTIVES OF THIS TRAINING: PROVIDE SCHOOL STAFF WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF: 1.What are Blood Borne Pathogens 2.How are they transmitted from person to person 3.What can you do to protect yourself 4.What happens if I potentially get exposed.
3
WHAT ARE BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS?
4
BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS ARE DISEASE CAUSING MICROORGANISMS THAT ARE FOUND IN THE BLOOD AND CERTAIN BODY FLUIDS OF AN INFECTED INDIVIDUAL
5
BODY FLUIDS THAT CAN CONTAIN A BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN ANY BODY FLUID WHICH CONTAINS OR COULD CONTAIN BLOOD CAN CARRY A BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN SWEAT, TEARS AND SALIVA (WITHOUT VISIBLE BLOOD) USUALLY DO NOT CARRY BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS ALWAYS TREAT ALL BODY FLUIDS AS POTENTIALLY INFECTIOUS.
6
TYPES OF BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS HEPATITIS B HEPATITIS C HIV
7
HEPATITIS B FACTS *CAUSES LIVER DAMAGE IN INFECTED INDIVIDUALS *MAY LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE BODY FOR 7 DAYS (IN DRIED BLOOD) *SOME INFECTED INDIVIDUALS HAVE NO SYMPTOMS AND MAY NOT KNOW THAT THEY ARE INFECTED *IF A PERSON HAS HEPATITS B THEY MAY HAVE THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS: ABDOMINAL PAIN, YELLOWING OF THE SKIN AND EYES (JAUNDICE), FEVER, FATIGUE, NAUSEA AND VOMITING *THERE IS NO CURE FOR HEPATITIS B BUT IT CAN BE PREVENTED WITH A VACCINATION.
8
HEPATITIS C FACTS * A VIRUS THAT CAUSES LIVER DAMAGE IN INFECTED INDIVIDUALS *SOME INFECTED INDIVIDUALS MAY NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS AND MAY NOT KNOW THEY ARE INFECTED *SYMPTOMS OF INFECTION MAY INCLUDE: ABDOMINAL PAIN, YELLOWING OF THE SKIN AND EYES (JAUNDICE), NAUSEA, VOMITING, AND FEVER *THERE IS NO CURE FOR HEPATITIS C AND THERE IS NO VACCINE TO PREVENT HEP C
9
HIV FACTS *HIV-HUMAN IMMUNODEFICENCY VIRUS *ATTACKS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF INFECTED INDIVIDUALS *SOME INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE INFECTED DO NOT SHOW SYMPTOMS AND THEREFORE DO NOT KNOW THEY ARE INFECTED *SYMPTOMS VARY FROM INDIVIDUAL TO INDIVIDUAL *THERE IS NO CURE FOR HIV AND NO VACCINE TO PREVENT IT AT THIS TIME
10
HOW ARE BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS TRANSMITTED?
11
TRANSMISSION TRANSMISSION CAN OCCUR WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL COMES IN CONTACT WITH INFECTIOUS BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS. MODES OF EXPOSURE: PERCUTANEOUS- NEEDLE STICK WITH CONTAMINATED NEEDLE MUCOUS MEMBRANE- SPLASH OF BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS INTO EYES, NOSE OR MOUTH NON INTACT SKIN-BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS COMING INTO CONTACT WITH A CUT OR OPEN AREA OF SKIN
12
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF TREAT ALL BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS AS POTENTIALLY INFECTIOUS WEAR GLOVES WHEN CONTACT WITH BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS OR BEFORE PERFORMING ANY ACTIVITY THAT COULD POTENTIALLY EXPOSE YOU TO BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS WEAR GOGGLES, MASKS AND A GOWN IF NEEDED TO PROTECT YOU FROM BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS ACCIDENTLY ENTERING YOUR EYES, NOSE, MOUTH OR GETTING ON YOUR SKIN
13
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU HAVE AN EXPOSURE? Wash exposed area with antibacterial soap and running water If exposure is to eyes, nose or mouth flush these areas with running water for 15 minutes Immediately report incident to principal, school nurse (if in building), and to human resource department
14
IN CONCLUSION…. TREAT ALL BODY FLUIDS AS INFECTIOUS ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES, GOWN, AND OR MASK WHEN PERFORMING PROCEDURES WHERE YOU COULD BE EXPOSED REPORT ANY EXPOSURES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO YOU CAN RECEIVE IMMEDIATE MEDICAL EVALUATION
