Bureau of Meteorology Update Anthony Rea National Manager Composite Operations (with kind assistance from Gary Dietachmeyer, Christopher Down and Kelvin Wong)
2
Outline External environment Operations update NWP update RTH Melbourne update
3
External Environment Government investment in space –Formed a Space Policy Unit in Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Research –Intention to formulate a Space Policy covering multiple areas including Earth Observations from Space Tight budgetary position –Modest cutbacks
4
Direct Reception Geo network –Fixed antennae –Bureau-developed digital receiver and ingestor L-band network –Tracking 2.4m antennae –Bureau-developed digital receiver and ingestor X-band (dual-band) network –Tracking 2.4m antennae –ES&S proprietary receiver and ingestor
5

6
Coverage from Bureau Receiving Stations
7
Direct Reception Capability and Status X-band network –Now in a mature phase –MODIS/AIRS product for forecasters –Real-time AIRS for NWP –Townsville X-band (AIMS) –Future plans L-band –COMS reception plans –MetOp reception development and plans –Consolidation of GEO reception sites in medium term
8
X-band Processing Chain Ingestor (COTS) Processing Machine (COTS) B-machine (IMAPP) Pre-packaged products NASA algorithms Black box HDF Products Standard IMAPP algorithms Web-based products BUFR products Customisable

MODIS Imagery 4x Scale - 100 km
19
MODIS Imagery 8x Scale - 500 km
20
AIRS Temperature Profiles are derived for cloud free areas.
21
AIRS Temperature Profiles Displays a thumb nail image from each point
22
AIRS Temperature Profiles Clicking the thumb nail produces a high resolution profile
23
AIRS Temperature Profiles RED – Temperature with error bars (typically +- 1 degree) GREEN – derived dew point temperature
24
AIRS Radiosonde Validation Campaign Sonde launch sites Example sonde/AIRS comparison Average differences for two stations
25
Real-time AIRS data for NWP Australian contribution to IMAPP –Addition of AMSU to BUFR encoder –Excellent collaborative work by Zhihong Li (Bureau) and Nigel Atkinson (UKMO) Real-time data available –300-channel subset –BUFR format –Interoperable with global AIRS data –In real-time database now, impact experiment will commence soon, followed by operational use
26
Challenges and Issues Data backhaul is costly –Research network AARNET used for Perth and Hobart –Internet used for Townsville –Darwin is not possible with current network capacity COTS Supplier –Ensuring they are ready for NPP, JPSS, Fengyun-3 and MetOp Internal technical expertise –Maintaining a sustainable core of satellite engineering expertise
