Important Organic Molecules

 Basic Lab Procedures & Safety  Create Groups  Go over lab material procedures  The ninhydrin test is longest.

 Quantitative (4.2 g/ml)  Semi-quantitative (increased twice as much)  Qualitative (yes or no)

 Miniscus  Labeling tubes

Carbohydrates (book’s test 1-3)  Benedict’s Test (Simple sugars)  Test #1a: (variety of compounds): Tubes A to G  Test #1b: (glucose concentration): A to G  Iodine / Starch Test (Polysaccarides)  Test #3: Same 6 as above, except change sucrose to glycogen Porcelain spot plates, mark A-G

Lipids (Tests 4-5)  Simple Paper Test (not counted as a number) Rub compound on paper  Lipid Solubility Test  Test 4 Tubes A, B, C  Sudan Identification  Test 5A – LABEL PG 9 “test for SUDAN IDENTIFICATION” as Test 5A. Use tubes from Test 4.  Sudan Filter Paper Method  Test 5B (book’s Test 5) Filter paper divided into 6 sections marked A-F

Proteins (Test 6-7)  Biuret Reagent (Polypeptides)  Test 6 6 test tubes A-F  Ninhydrin Test (Amino Acids)  Test 7 – longest in lab. Filter paper into 6 sections A-F just like Sudan Test (#7)

Nucleic Acids (Test 8)  Dische Diphenylamine Test (Nucleic Acids)  Test #10 4 Test tubes A-D

Title Page (4 points)  Title, Course Information, Group Member’s Names, % of participation for each member written next to name. Test Summaries (20 points)  1-2 pages, double-spaced  For each test the group performed, write a brief paragraph describing the test and how it is performed  Provide the data (reconstruct the Tables from the book). You may use the tables in the book if this is easier, but WRITE LEGIBLY OR POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED. Discussion Questions #1-19 (page 14-19)  3-5 pages max.  Type the question in bold and the answer below (not bold).  Answer all parts of all questions.  Each question is graded on grammar & spelling (25%), completeness (50%), and correctness (25%) – 4 points a question, for a total of 76 points. Your Group’s Final Grade will be based on how carefully these instructions were followed.

 Section MC  Group 1: Unknown A Amanda  Group 2 : Unknown C Shanyia  Group 3: Unknown A Daisy  Group 4: Unknown D Audrey  Group 5: Unknown C Patricia  Group 6: Unknown D Alex

 Section MC  Group 1: Unknown A Khalil  Group 2 : Unknown C Kelly  Group 3: Unknown A Sheila  Group 4: Unknown D Richelle  Group 5: Unknown C Tram

 A: water, DNA, Alanine  B: glucose, starch, albumin  C: glucose  D: proline, starch

 “variable” vs. “sample”  “starchy” and “high in simple surgars”  http://www.netrition.com/rdi_page.html http://www.netrition.com/rdi_page.html  http://www.tpub.com/content/medical/142 95/css/14295_320.htm http://www.tpub.com/content/medical/142 95/css/14295_320.htm
