Types of Narrator A Few Basic Types

Participant  Writes in first person  May be a major or a minor character

Types of Participant Narrators  Innocent Narrator- Does not understand the implications of the events, but reports them.  Unreliable Narrator- May not be believable due to deception, delusion, or derangement.

Non- Participant  Writes in third person  Can possess different levels of knowledge of characters: Omniscient- Sees into the mind of all the characters. Limited Omniscience- Sees events through the eyes of one character. Objective- Does not enter the mind of any character; an outside observer.

In Class Writing  A Rose for Emily Answer question 4 on pg 35, book 1  The Tell-Tale Heart In this Poe classic, the paranoid narrator could be seen as somewhat comic and amusing even though this is a tale of horror. Sometimes, humor and horror are not far apart. Can you think of a time in your life that you were scared, but your response seemed inappropriate? (Ex: Laughing when about to be punished)
