VISION The irrefutable champion of the holistic, innovative and sustained development of South Africa’s productive capacity for the equitable benefit of all in a socially responsible manner. MISSION The NPI is a tripartite body dedicated to the development and enhancement of South Africa’s productive capacity by articulating the spirit of tripartism through research, information dissemination, training, facilitation, consultation, auditing and monitoring on all productivity issues and challenges in order to improve the quality of life of all South Africans. Our aim is to contribute to an improved standard of living of all South Africans by ensuring that: A productivity improvement mindset is internalised Sustainable productivity performance of organisations and sectors is achieved in an inclusive and collaborative manner

What is productivity? Previously, the concept of productivity was about the efficiency ratio. The concept has evolved to include the element of human endeavour and development. The NPI’s definition of productivity as converting resources (inputs) into products and services (outputs) efficiently, effectively and with optimum utilisation of human capital and physical resources for the benefit of society, the economy and the environment. What is the NPI’s approach to productivity improvement? The NPI’s unique approach to productivity improvement is: Customer-focused and people centred; Promotes collaboration between management and labour; Encourages a productivity mindset that is internalised; Is multidisciplinary and integrative; Promotes social and environmental sustainability; Sector and cluster based; Alignment to national priorities; and Delivery through partnerships/networks/alliances

South Africa is signatory to a Productivity Declaration, signed by Presidents of the SADC countries The NPI helped to establish productivity centres in African countries, including, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe and acted as a key resource organisation for productivity knowledge in Botswana, Mauritius, Zambia, Namibia, Swaziland, Kenya and Lesotho. The NPI aims to continue to strengthen its linkages with SADC and NEPAD initiatives to promote productivity. The Secretariat of Pan African Productivity Association is housed at NPI. NPI in SADC and the African continent
