2 2 Today’s Objective...  Today we are going to analyze social hierarchies in Eurasian Civilizations using lecture.

3 The Common Phenomenon of Social Hierarchies  Most of the civilizations are Patriarchal  Most civilizations had a religious justification for the divisions in society  Most civilizations had some form of slavery.

4 China is Unique…  The Chinese Hierarchy allows for limited mobility in society through the examination system.  Allowing the those who could afford education to become Elite Officials  Merchants were seen as “used car salesman” but could make enough money to purchase land or send their sons to school.

5 India…refer to last week’s lecture…

6 Greco-Roman Slavery  Because the Roman Empire grew through conquest, there were many prisoners of war, which meant diversity within the ever growing population of slaves.
