Addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences

Addiction has two properties: ● addictive stimuli is positively reinforcing so the individual seeks repeated exposure ● the stimuli is intrinsically rewarding and stimulate the brain’s “reward pathways”

People can be addicted to both substances and behaviors. Classic hallmarks of addiction include impaired control, preoccupation, and continued use/engagement in substances/behaviors.
