What is a juvenile? A juvenile is any person who is not an adult In PA, juveniles are anybody under 18 People who commit crimes are known as juvenile offenders, or juvenile delinquents.

Juvenile Law Two areas of juvenile law: ▫Neglect Involves cases in which juveniles are neglected or abused by parents Juveniles can be sent to other guardians or care centers ▫Delinquency Committing crimes Offenses only for juveniles: skipping school, curfew violations, underage drinking, etc.

Purpose of Juvenile Law Rehabilitation –NOT punishment In other words, the goal is to fix behavior instead of punishing it

Juvenile Courts After arrest, parents notified No fingerprints or photographs Records kept private Juveniles and parents meet with ▫Lawyer ▫Judge ▫Police officer and probation officer Cross examination and witnesses ** However, there is no jury!**

Punishments for Juveniles Warning Special school or detention center Repeat or neglected offenders may become a ward of the court – court takes custody of kid Probation In rare occasions, juveniles can be treated as adults
