1 Bartholomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer who sailed around the southernmost tip of Africa, in 1488. On October 10, 1486 King John II of Portugal sent Dias on a mission to find go around the southern tip of Africa, hoping to find a trade route to India. Dias wanted to keep sailing and enter India but he was forced to turn around because he crew refused to go on. On his way back to Lisbon, he discovered the Cape of Good Hope in May 1488. After gone for sixteen months, Dias returns home to Lisbon in December of 1488. By: Kylee Woods

2 Dias was born in 1457 and died in 1500. Dias was an navigator and explorer and was the first European to lead a 1487 voyage. 1486 Dias was named the leader of the expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa by King John II. King John II also told Dias to make contact with a Christian ruler in the Indies called Prester John. Dias’ voyage for King John II lasted 16 months.

3 In 1481 Dias joined Diogo d’ Azambuja to explore the Gold Coast of Africa. In 1486 Dias sailed for King John II to find trade route to India and also to make contact with Prester John. In 1487 Dias embarked from the River Tagus below Lisbon. 1488 Dias returned to Lisbon having opened the Trade route. 1500 Dias accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral on the voyage that resulted in the discovery of Brazil.

4 Dias had 3 different voyages. 1500 Dias assisted on a voyage to discover Brazil. 1497 Dias assisted an expedition led by Vasco da Gama, to India 1486 Dias went out on an expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa. May 24, 1500, Dias dies in a storm in the Cape of Good Hope.

5 Dias first caravel he sailed on was called Sao Cristovao. Dias second caravel he sailed in was called Sao Pantaleao. Dias helped in the building of Sao Gabriel and it’s sister ship Sao Rafael. Dias also sailed half of da Gama’s voyage on the Sao Gabriel. On the first half of Dias’ sail with da Gama, he was 2 nd captain for the time he sailed.

6 Dias nationality was Portuguese and he had a noble Portuguese family. Dias’ career was to be a navigator and explorer. Dias’ lifespan was 1457- 1500. May 14, 1500, Dias dies in a violent storm. Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral all used charts prepared by Bartolomeu Dias

7 Born in Sabrosa, northern Portugal in 1480. Obtained Spanish nationality in order to serve King Charles I of Spain. His 1519-1522 expedition, first expedition to sail from Atlantic Ocean into Pacific Ocean. Assisted King Charles I in search of westward route to “Spice Islands.” Named the Pacific Ocean the peaceful sea.

8 Magellan was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. First explorer to cross the meridians of the globe. His best maps convinced him that he could sail to the Spice Islands by rounding southern tip of South America. Led five Spanish ships and 251 men in the first around-the-world sailing expedition. Studied astronomy and navigation for about two years.

9 Led the first European voyage of discovery to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan joined the Portuguese service to sail with the fleet in 1505. Magellan proved himself in many battles in the name of his country. King Charles approved Magellan's plan and granted him generous funds. Magellan found the strait and named it the strait of All Saints, but it later was named after him.
