What is a paragraph?

paragraph: a group of sentences that forms a unity

*unified (sentences should all refer to a main idea)

*coherent (sentences should be arranged in a logical manner)

*well-developed (every idea should be explained and supported through evidence and details)

1. controlling idea * main idea, topic or focus of the paragraph * in the form of a topic sentence * announces and controls the content of the paragraph

2. Explanation of controlling idea * reason for your thinking about the main topic, idea or focus of the paragraph * how the reader should interpret the topic sentence

3. Supporting details * examples * figures/statistics * researches/interviews * evidence * news/current issues

4. Explanation of supporting details * What do the supporting details imply/suggest/show? * relate the supporting details to the main idea/topic sentence

5. Completion of paragraph’s idea * a review * typing up the loose ends
