11.2 Apply Proportion to Scale Models SWBAT solve problems involving scale drawings
2
Definitions Scale A ration between 2 sets of measurements Scale Model/Scale Drawing Uses a scale to represent an object smaller than (reduction) or larger than (enlargement) the actual object Map distance Actual distance
3
Solve Scale Using Proportions Remember the cross-products rule Rocky Mountain National Park is about 75 miles from Denver. On a map with a scale of 1 in:30 miles, what is its map distance from Denver? 1 30 x 75 = 30x = 75 30 = 30 x = 2 ½ inches
4
Solve Scale Using Proportions A statue of a Husky, South High School’s mascot, stands in front of the school. The ceramics class is making scale replicas of the statue. The students are using the scale 8cm:0.5m. The actual statue is 2 meters long. Jesse’s replica is 40 cm long, while Terry’s is 32 cm long. Which students replica is the correct length?
5
Examples Use the scale 2in:75mi Sacramento is about 169 miles from Yosemite National Park. About how far are they on the map? Los Angeles is shown 10 inches from San Francisco. What is the actual distance between the two cities?
6
Examples Use the scale 7cm:2m What are the actual dimensions of a room that is drawn as 17.5 cm by 14 cm on the blueprint? The bathtub that was ordered is 1.7 m long. The space allowed for it on the blueprint is 5.6 cm. Will the bathtub fit?
