1 Starter – think about these questions, you can jot ideas in the back of your book!
What is an acid? What is an alkali? What is the difference between an base and an alkali? What does neutral mean? What is neutralisation?

2 Objectives To understand and be able to use key science words (acid, alkali, neutral, base and neutralisation). To know the general equation for neutralisation and be able to use this to generate specific equations. To be able to add details onto a data logged graph of neutralisation.

3 pH scale 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 Use the interactive whiteboard pens to annotate the pH scale with example of household items with their pH, acid, alkali and neutral.

4 Neutralisation Measure 20cm3 of hydrochloric acid into a beaker.
Add a few drops of UI soln. Using a pipette, add sodium hydroxide to the acid. Observe. Allow small groups of students to complete this as an egg race and give the first team a prose for getting a neutral solution.

5 Set up the data logger Log onto the computer.
Take a temperature probe and put it into the USB drive. Take the pH probe and put it into the USB drive. Start, programmes, Vernier Software, LoggerPro

6 Neutralisation Measure 30ml of HCl into a beaker.
Add a little squirt of UI soln. Put the probe into the ice. Start collecting the data. Add NaOH slowly until you have added 35ml. Stop collecting the data and autoscale. Print your graph.

7 Neutralisation Mark in red pen where the graph is acid.
Mark in blue pen where the graph is basic. Make in green pen where neutralisation happens. Contrast the temperature and the pH graph – what do they show you? Use the interactive pens to annotate the graph if students require further clarification on the task. pH Time
