What happens when you mix acids and alkalis?
L/O – To understand neutralisation
2
What has happened here? The acid remains at the top
The acid and alkali mix in the middle to produce a neutral This is called Neutralisation The alkali sinks to the bottom
3
You are going to be given a selection of acids and alkalis.
Your task is to create 2 different neutral substances and to be able to say which is the strongest acid What are you going to do? When the acid and alkali react they create a salt and water Acid + Alkali Salt + Water Hydrochloric acid + Sodium Hydroxide Sodium Chloride + water What salt have you created? Can you write out word equations for each of your neutral solutions How will you know when you have a neutral solution? How will you know which acid you use is the strongest?

Stings What would you put on each of these stings to ease the pain?
A bee sting is acidic A wasp sting is alkaline What would you put on each of these stings to ease the pain? Why can bicarbonate of soda (pH 9) be used to treat a bee sting? Why can vinegar (pH 3) be used to treat a wasp sting? Adding just the right amount of acid or alkali to the sting causes it to neutralise!
