Topic: Functional Group #7: Esters Do Now:
2
Esters General format R and R ‘ = hydrocarbon branches – Can be same or different Esters contain carbonyl group and an O bridge – both in middle of chain
3
Esters R C O R ‘ or RCOOR ’ carboxylic acidalcohol Combination of carboxylic acid & alcohol = O
4
Properties Esters are POLAR No H bonded to O so no H-bonding Lower BP then Carboxlyic Acids and Alcohols Responsible for many distinctive odors
5
Naming Esters Name hydrocarbon branch bonded to the bridge O first – branches end in –yl Base name derived from branch containing carbonyl group – count up all C ’ s in this branch including the C in the carbonyl Find the hydrocarbon base name – drop the -e and -oate
6
CH 3 CH 2 C─O─CH 3 = O Carbonyl Group Bridge O name this branch 1 st Methyl Propanoate
7
Name this branch 1 st Ethyl Butanoate Pineapple Bridge O
8
CH 3 O C CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 = O Bridge O Name this branch 1 st Methyl butanoate apple
9
CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -O-C-CH 3 O = Bridge O Name this branch 1 st Octyl Ethanoate orange
