o The United Nations was created after World War II. o League of Nations was the organization that was failing, then they brought in the UN to replace. o The UN was formed in the World Wars, for the countries to communicate with each other and work together and avoid problems, mainly to maintain peace.

o To save succeeding generations from war. o To reaffirm faith of human rights in individuals. To reaffirm equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small. o To establish justice and respect of arising treaties and other sources of international law. o To promote social progress in expansion of better standards for the life of larger freedom.

o The current secretary General of the UN is Ban Ki-Moon. o There are 193 countries that are members of the United Nations. o The United Nations headquarters is located in the turtle bay area of Manhattan.

o The General Assembly passes laws for the State of Pennsylvania. o The General Assembly makes up the Representatives of the United Nations. o In the General Assembly each person gets one vote (like a parliament). Parliament: A nation's legislative body, made up of elected and sometimes nonelected representatives. o The preamble generally presents the considerations on the basis of which action is taken, an opinion expressed or a directive given. The operative part states the opinion of the organ or the action to be taken.

o The security council is the person that maintains international peace and security of the country. o There are 5 countries that sit on the security council. o The five permanent members of the security council are China, France, Russian federation, United Kingdom, and the United States.

o The International Court of Justice is placed in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. o Cases of the International Court of Justice: Jurisdictional Immunities of the State (Germany v. Italy: Greece Intervening) was a case concerning the extent of state immunity before the International Court of Justice. The case was brought by Germany after various decisions by Italian courts to ignore the state immunity of Germany when confronted with claims against Germany by victims of Nazi war crimes.

o The World Health Organization is placed in headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. o Challenge to improve sanitation,2.4 billion people – one-third of the world’s population – will remain without access to improved sanitation in 2015, according to WHO/UNICEF report.

o The United Nations Children's Fund- UNICEF o After World War II, European children face famine and disease. UNICEF is created in December 1946 by the United Nations to provide food, clothing and health care to people of Europe. o UNICEF relies on contributions from governments and private donors. UNICEF's total income for 2008 was $3,372,540,239. Governments contribute two thirds of the organization's resources, private groups and 6 million individuals contributed, the rest was by the National Committee. 91.8% of their revenue is distributed to Program Services. UNICEF's program develops services to promote the health and well- being of children.
