Winslow Homer American Painter and Printmaker Most famous for Watercolor Seascapes 1836-1910 By Adrianna Thomas

Born in Boston, Mass. Apprenticed to a Commercial Lithographer. Largely self-taught artist, but did spend a year in Paris studying Impressionism. Began freelance career as a commercial illustrator. He was sent to sketch Battle Scenes and Camp Life during Civil War.

After the Civil War, made transition from illustrator to painter. Took up oil painting producing major works in his NY studio. Snap the Whip

In 1875, Homer quit working as an illustrator. He spent 2 years in England where he rekindled his love for the sea. When he came back to the US, he moved to Maine’s coastline. During winter he traveled to the coast of Florida & the Caribbean to paint. He began using watercolors and revolutionized this medium.
