Scenario 1 Joe is born to a drug addicted mother who smoked and used narcotics during her pregnancy. Joe’s mother struggles to make ends meet, so he has to often change schools, spends most of his free time alone and has never been on a vacation. Joe’s mother also does not encourage him study or read.  Joe’s potential IQ: 85

Scenario 2 Joe is born into a loving family and his mother took prenatal vitamins and played him Mozart during her pregnancy. He is read stories every night for approximately 1 hour before bed. At 2 years old, he is enrolled in a prestigious pre-school and continues to attend top schools for the rest of his childhood. His parents are college-educated and take him on interesting vacations every year, so he can learn about other people’s culture and history.  Joe’s IQ: 110

 A study done by Arvey found that choice of vocation and overall job satisfaction is largely influenced by your genes.  Bouchard and Loehlin found that people’s characteristics such as extraversion- introversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness are influenced by genetics.  The biggest argument against Bouchard is that the assumption of “equal environment is faulty.” (BTW this argument is addressed and refuted by several other researchers.)

They studied to see if falling in love is genetic. (It isn’t, but divorce likelihood is.)

 What is genetic testing?  Would you want to know if you carry the genes to cause serious illness?

1. Everyone will receive a scenario. 2. Read the “Introduction” side of the handout first. 3. Then read the other side of the handout to see who you are. 4. On a piece of paper, respond to the following:  Who are you?  List the pros/cons of your situation.  Respond to the question at the end of your scenario. You may be asked to share your responses.

1. Form a group of 4 people who each read different scenarios:  Elizabeth  Judy  Miriam  David 2. One-at-a-time, share your situation, the pros & cons of it and what you’ve decided to do. Turn in your papers (when you are done).

You are a consultant asked to work with a company that has suddenly experienced a huge increase in the diversity of its workers. This trucking company has employed almost exclusively males for the last twenty-five years, but over the last five years they have employed increasing numbers of women. In fact, as of their last hiring blitz 40% of their employees are women.

Many of the men who have been there for a while are beginning to grumble. Some are hassling the women about their choice of career. In an effort to ease the transition for both old and new employees, the company's owners want you to help them design a program to make their current employees aware of the biases they bring to the workplace regarding gender roles.

After much reflection, you decide that the best way to do this is to teach the employees about how people develop gender-based expectations for behavior. You decide to use social learning theory and gender schema theory to help change attitudes and behavior within the company.

1. Discuss how you would use each theory to explain to the current male truckers how they have formed their notions of appropriate male and female occupations.  Social learning theory  Gender schema theory 2. On a piece of paper:  Give possible examples for each theory that are specifically related to the company’s situation.  Pick one of these theories and use it to design a program or campaign that the owners can use to help change the male truckers’ attitudes about women in their workplace. 3. You will be presenting your campaign or program to the class. In your study groups…
