1 Web Design Workshop DIG 4104c Spring 2014 Dr. J. Michael Moshell and Mr. Jon Friskics University of Central Florida Lecture 4: SmartGit – A GUI Client for git www.redbugbblle.com

-2 - About SmartGit 1. You'll see it described as SmartGitHg Hg is the chemical symbol for the element mercury and for the Mercurial version control system (we don't use it) 2. It's free for noncommercial use, but this fact is a bit hard to find on the website which is www.syntevo.com/smartgithg/ (from Germany.)
3
-3 - Why use SmartGit? 1. The PC and Mac versions are almost identical. 2. It provides the same services as command-line git, but in a convenient GUI form 3. It integrates smoothly with the online repo bitbucket, which we will start using next week. This week, your goal is to learn how to use it as a single user (even if you're married.)

-4 - What are the 'gotchas'? A gotcha is something that stops you for hours (or forever) until you painfully discover (or are shown) how to move forward. I will demonstrate smartgit in class, but I won't write out all the steps here (see Labsheet 3). However, my MAIN 'gotcha' was......

-5 - View/Show Unchanged Files For SOME reason, the Files menu will sometimes show NOTHING. I finally, painfully, discovered that you have to go to the View menu, and select "View Unchanged Files". I'll now walk through the process of * selecting all the files * staging * committing * modifying a file and observing the changes * committing the new changes

-6 - The Log File I ran out of room while building the Labsheet 3, so it doesn't show you the Log. Here's my Log, for one file in my wife's business system. I'll demonstrate it 'live' in class. Note that whenever I click on a log entry, the associated changes are shown in the dual windows below. RED: deletionsGREEN: Additions

8
-8 - The Log File There's a VERY USEFUL "next change" arrow up/down, in lower right corner.

-9 - Learning by Doing The only way to learn how to use git is to use git. It's like riding a bicycle. I can't really TELL you how to do it. I can just tell you to do it. So... go do it. (On Friday). Meanwhile, Happy Football Game! fitsit360.com
