Gulf of Maine Council/NOAA Habitat Restoration Partnership 2002-2005 GRANTS PROGRAM FOR HABITAT RESTORATION IN THE GULF OF MAINE –Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia –$300,000 per year for competitive community-based restoration grants –Gulf of Maine Council partnership with the NOAA Restoration Center TOTAL AWARDS:$1.2 million TOTAL MATCH:$3.9 million TOTAL PROJECT VALUE: $5.4 million NUMBER OF PROJECTS: MA: 20, NH: 5 ME: 16, NB: 1, NS: 1 TOTAL: 43

RIPARIAN VEGETATION SUBTIDAL/INTERTIDAL14 MILLION OYSTER LARVAE SEEDED AND 40 ACRES MUDFLAT TRAINING90 VOLUNTEER SALT MARSH AND COASTAL INVASIVE PLANT MONITORS Note: Some of this represents feasibility work and it is assumed habitat will be restored once the entire project is implemented. Habitat restored also includes other funding sources.

Challenges to Coastal Restoration? Finding applicants who have the technical capacity to develop and manage projects Scarcity of non-federal funds to match federal grant opportunities Lack of coordinated coastal land use policies for regional wetlands management

Recommendations for Improving Coastal Wetlands Restoration Efforts Focus funding, training and technical assistance on capacity building at the local level Encourage local / state government and private sector to dedicate funding for restoration projects Evaluate regional coastal land use impacts on wetlands and consider actions
