Fantasy Hat Project Working in teams of 5 :- Design a hat that could be included as part of a Dai Rees/Philip Treacy show. Use his work, your knowledge of hats, and current styles/trends as your inspiration. You will be asked to present your prototype hats to the group, justifying your thinking. You will be awarded marks out of 40, on the following basis:- Innovation >is your design original? 10 marks Impact >does your design stand out? 10 marks Style, >is your design trendy this season? 10 marks Cost, >is your design cost effective? 10 marks

Dai Rees is from South Wales and originally trained in ceramics and glass at Central St.Martins and the Royal College of Art. He began by working for some of Britain’s top designers to create show accessories, including : the quill head pieces for Alexander McQueen’s Spring Summer ‘97 collection ‘La Poupee’. the body and head quill constructions for Julien MacDonald’s Autumn Winter ‘97 ‘Mermaids’ and Spring Summer ‘98 ‘Modernist’ collections. He has established a reputation for creating innovative fashion headwear. He has won many awards for his innovative and imaginative work. Designer study >Philip Treacy Philip Treacy is one of the most innovative hat designers in the world today. His work can be described as sculpture that is worn. His first designs were made from items discovered in flee markets. He has collected a number of awards including Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 1991, 92, 93, 96 and 97. Since his graduation from The Royal College of Art in 1988 he has worked with some of the most high profile couture designers in the world, including John Galliano, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Helmut Lang and Versace. Today’s Trends Hats are as popular now as they have ever been. Trends are taken from history, working wear and different countries. An alternative twist may be put on these items, possibly a change of colour, texture or material, in order to create a new trend or style.
