Note 8: Algebraic Fractions
Algebraic fractions follow the same rules as numerical fractions. Adding and Subtracting Fractions can only be added or subtracted if they have the same denominator. Example: Simplify 2d + 4d = 10d d Common denominator is 15 = 22d 15

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominatiors together – then simplify if possible Example: Calculate 5m x 8p n = 40mp 18n = 20mp 9n

Dividing To divide a fraction multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Example: Calculate 2e d = 2e x 5 d Multiply by reciprocal = 10e 21d
