The Coordinate Plane By: Christine Berg Edited By:VTHamilton
2
Definition The plane formed when 2 perpendicular number lines intersect at their zero points Coordinate Plane Coordinate Plane
3
Coordinate Plane The perpendicular number lines form a grid on the plane
5
X-axis The horizontal number line Positive to the right Positive to the right Negative to the left Negative to the left
6
Y-axis The vertical number line Positive Positive upward Negative Negative downward
7
Origin Where the x and y axes intersect at their zero points
9
Quadrants The x and y axes divide the coordinate plane into 4 parts called quadrants

Ordered Pair A pair of numbers (x, y) assigned to a point on the coordinate plane
12
Ordered Pair (x, y) X-coordinate Y-coordinate
13
Plotting a Point Step 1: Begin at the Origin
14
Plotting a Point Step 2: Locate x on the x-axis by moving left or right
15
Plotting a Point Step 3: Move up or down to locate the value of y
16
Plotting a Point Step 4: Draw a dot and label the point with its ordered pair
17
In Your Own Words What What is a coordinate plane? Define Define origin How How do you plot a point?
18
Ordered Pair… A pair of numbers (x, y) used to locate a particular point on the coordinate plane
19
The Origin is… The intersection of the two number lines at their zeros. Its ordered pair is (0,0)
20
To plot a point… Starting at the origin, use the x-value to move left or right and the y-value to move up or down, (x, y). Mark the location with a dot. Negative x-values move left and negative y-values move down.
