Please begin filling out the student interest survey while you wait
2
On your Post-it… Write down the average number of texts you send per day Compared to your peers do you believe you text more or less than they do? – Justify your reasoning
3
Order Yourselves Collect the data on texting for students in this class
4
Order Yourselves Collect the data on texting for students in this class Collect the data on texting for students in this class BY GENDER
5
Using the Histograms below list everything you “know” about students who text during class
6
With your partner: Find TWO things you both think the histograms “say” and justify why you think they say that.
7
Algebra II 53% of young people surveyed said that they would rather give up their sense of smell than their technology 80% of jobs that will exist in the future do not exist now! – The world is rapidly changing and thus so must education – Common Core

Histogram of Our Class Data Whole Class

Histogram of Our Class Data Male Vs. Female
10
Exit Slip: How does our class data on texting compare to this study’s data on texting?

I. Is a Statistic just a number? A) Example of a statistic: 99% of males and 98% of females under the age of 18 report playing videogames regularly 90% of 4 th to 8 th graders report being victims of bullying 77% of young adults are very/somewhat confident that they can text and drive safely 53% of young people surveyed said that they would rather give up their sense of smell than their technology
12
B) Definitions: ① Statistics is the science/process of collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing information in order to draw conclusions
13
C) Steps of a Statistical Study: 1.Determine the research objective. AKA: the question(s) to be answered 2.Collect the needed information from the population a.Population-ALL individuals in a group b.Sample-Only a portion of the individuals in the population 3.Organize and summarize the information using descriptive statistics a.Descriptive statistics provides an overview of the information collected through the use of numerical measures, charts, graphs, and/or tables. 4.Draw conclusions from the information collected a.When the information collected from the sample is then generalized to the population this is called inferential statistics
14
D) Example: 1.On average teenage girls text three times as much as teenage boys do
15
D) Example: 2.Histogram

Your Turn 99% of males and 98% of females under the age of 18 report playing videogames regularly 90% of 4 th to 8 th graders report being victims of bullying 77% of young adults are very/somewhat confident that they can text and drive safely 53% of young people surveyed said that they would rather give up their sense of smell than their technology

II. What Does a Histogram Say? A)Definition: ①A histogram is a tool (chart/graph) used to display either frequency or relative frequency ②The frequency of an event is the number of times that event occurred ③The relative frequency is the proportion (or percent) of observations within an event compared to the other observations
18
B) Example: 1.USE CLASS DATA from survey for this male
19
B) Example: 1.USE CLASS DATA from survey for this female

Your Turn The manager of Wendy’s is trying to decide if she should hire another employee to work the lunch hour. She feels that her current employees shouldn’t need another employee but her employees are complaining that they are too busy and need more help to keep customers happy. She decides to track the number of customers who come into Wendy’s, at the lunch hour, during 15 minute intervals (see chart to the right). Create a mathematical argument to defend whether or not she should hire another employee. Number of Customers at Wendy’s 766 566 271 655 229 626 682 469 6411 424 377 557 658 5
