What was the Civil War?

How were the two sides different? The North (Union) An economy based on factories and machines Limited use of slavery The South (confederacy) An economy based on agriculture (farming) Relied on slave labor to work on the plantations (large farms).

What caused the Civil War? Cause number 1: Slavery. Many people in the North wanted to abolish (end) slavery and prevent slavery from spreading to new states and territories. The Southern States were opposed to abolishing slavery.

What caused the Civil War? Cause number 2: The debate over slavery created a lot of tension between the North and the South. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln, an known abolitionist (person who wants to end slavery) was elected president. Many Southern States Seceded (separated) from the United States and formed a new government called the confederacy.

Two actions taken by the president? Abraham Lincoln was president during the Civil War Action #1 declared war against the confederacy (the South)

Two actions taken by the president? Action #2: Signed the emancipation (freedom) proclamation ending slavery in all of the Northern States. This was the first step in completely ending slavery in America.

Two effects of the Civil War? The Confederacy was defeated and the Northern and Southern states were reunited as one country Effect 1 The 13 th Amendment was created, ending slavery in the United States. Effect 2
