1 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards

2 Persuasive Puritan preacher of New England in early 1700s. He would preach sermons to his playmates when he was a little boy. Became a leader of the Great Awakening, the religious revival that swept the colonies in 1730s and 40s.

3 Jonathan Edwards He had such conservative beliefs that, after the Great Awakening, he was asked to leave his position at the church. Later became president of Princeton University.

4 The Sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is considered the most famous (or infamous) sermon in American history. He delivered it to a congregation in 1741. While he delivered the speech in a very calm manner, it caused the church members to rise from their seats in a state of hysteria.

6 The Power of Persuasion Speaker’s Qualifications: Either by reputation alone or by displaying knowledge of subject, the speaker must be qualified to persuade you to make a decision.

7 The Power of Persuasion Audience: The speaker should be aware of his audience and talk accordingly. He must consider the audience’s age, background, interests, beliefs.

8 The Power of Persuasion Occasion: The time and place the speech is given will affect its content. Current events should be used to appeal to readers.

9 The Power of Persuasion Technique Speaker must decide which technique of persuasion to use: Appeal to logic Appeal to emotions Appeal to ethics (sense of right and wrong) Use a combination of appeals
