Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards

Persuasive Puritan preacher of New England in early 1700s. He would preach sermons to his playmates when he was a little boy. Became a leader of the Great Awakening, the religious revival that swept the colonies in 1730s and 40s.

Jonathan Edwards He had such conservative beliefs that, after the Great Awakening, he was asked to leave his position at the church. Later became president of Princeton University.

The Sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is considered the most famous (or infamous) sermon in American history. He delivered it to a congregation in 1741. While he delivered the speech in a very calm manner, it caused the church members to rise from their seats in a state of hysteria.

The Power of Persuasion Speaker’s Qualifications: Either by reputation alone or by displaying knowledge of subject, the speaker must be qualified to persuade you to make a decision.

The Power of Persuasion Audience: The speaker should be aware of his audience and talk accordingly. He must consider the audience’s age, background, interests, beliefs.

The Power of Persuasion Occasion: The time and place the speech is given will affect its content. Current events should be used to appeal to readers.

The Power of Persuasion Technique Speaker must decide which technique of persuasion to use: Appeal to logic Appeal to emotions Appeal to ethics (sense of right and wrong) Use a combination of appeals
