2 MISSOURI COMPROMISE 1818 ILLINOIS-Enters Union as a Free State Problem: 11 Free States 10 Slave States Southerners worried Congress would try to end slavery.

3 Southerners wanted Missouri to enter as a slave state to bring Congress back into balance People of Missouri want to become a free state Before problem is solved: Alabama enters as a Slave state. 11 Slave States 11 Free States

4 1819 Problem solved Right Wrong: Missouri is now even more important. Southern states want to make sure slavery continues. U.S. doesn't own southwest (hope to soon) and rest of Louisiana Purchase is Indian territory and not organized.

5 SECESSION Southern states begin to talk about secession from the Union A. Southern states believe U.S. is a club you can leave when you want. B. Northern states believe the U.S. is a gang that you cant leave. Southern states threaten Civil War if Missouri does not enter as a slave state.

6 THE COMPROMISE 1.MISSOURI-enters as a SLAVE state 2.MAINE-enters as a FREE state 3.The rest of the Louisiana Territory will be split. a. North of 36’ 30’’ Lat. Would be organized free. b. South of that line will be slave (except Missouri)

7 Terms to know: 1.Aristocracy- government in which power is given to those believed to be best qualified. (Land owning educated class) 2.Aristocrat- a member of the aristocracy 3.Abolitionist-Someone who called for the outlawing of slavery. a. Some wanted to re-settle slaves back in Africa-some did not b. African-Americans- (slave and free) most thought of America as home

8 People to know: 1.William Lloyd Garrison- editor- started the newspaper The Liberator a. called for immediate emancipation (freeing of all slaves) b. saw slavery as a violation of Christian values. 2. Frederick Douglas- former slave- becomes most famous anti-slavery lecturer.

9 Nat Turner Rebellion Nat Turner was a slave and gifted preacher Believed he was chosen by God to lead his people out of slavery. Turner and 80 of his followers attacked 4 plantations. Killed 60 white men, women and children Turner and his followers were captured by militia Turner and 200 blacks were hung in response (many were innocent).

10 Turners rebellion fed white fears about slave rebellion (more slaves in Mississippi than whites) Led to harsher laws in the south. (slaves not allowed away from plantation after dark, etc.) Southerners who were against slavery were intimidated into silence.

11 Women's Suffrage Suffrage- RIGHT TO VOTE- (not women suffering) Equal rights movement Seneca Falls Declaration-1848- Elizabeth Cady-Stanton held first big Women’s Right Conference in Seneca, NY. Stated- “All men and women created equal”; wanted right to vote.
